Personalization

Personalization That Works: From Salutation to Product Recommendation

Personalization is more than "Hello firstname". But it starts exactly there — and fails exactly there most often, too. There is a hierarchy of personalization, from the foundation to the crown. Take the stages in the right order, and you win. Skip stage 1, and you embarrass yourself on stage 4.

Do you know the cocktail party effect? In a loud room full of conversations, your head turns automatically the moment your name is mentioned somewhere. That very mechanism is why personalization works — and why it backfires so brutally when the name is wrong.

Stage 1: The correct salutation. Sounds banal, but it is the foundation. “Hello Sabine” only works if the name is right — spelled correctly, correct gender, no greeting addressed to “Hello Asdf”. A wrong salutation is worse than none. It proves to the recipient, in black and white, that your “personalization” is a hollow database query.

Stage 2: The fitting tone. Formal or casual? Emoji or sober? Age cohort and B2B/B2C classification help here. A managing-director contact on a company domain gets different language than a Gmail address from Gen Z.

Stage 3: The relevant content. Regional offers for the right region, womenswear for women, B2B whitepapers for business contacts. This is where segmentation pays off directly in click rates.

Stage 4: The right timing. The region’s holiday calendar, local occasions, life-stage signals. That is the supreme discipline — and it only works if the stages below it stand firm.

And now the punchline: none of these stages requires artificial intelligence. You need correct, enriched data and clear rules. In 25 years of email marketing I have seen it countless times — personalization is 80 percent a data quality problem and only 20 percent a creative one.

Remember: clean data first, then personalization. That is not a slogan. That is the order in which impact is created.
